House Training

This seems to be one of the most common problems with new dog owners. Puppies especially. As puppies, they can't control their bladder/bowel movements as well as older dogs so they constantly have to go to the bathroom, no matter where they are. This problem tends to be the number one reason why most puppies turn into outside dogs; Their owners think it is impossible to house train them and give up. Do not allow this to happen, with time and patience your dog will be house trained in no time.

If you are unable to be with the puppy for a long period of time each day, keep the dog in a small area with paper on the floor. Place food, water, toys and any other necessary items in the room with him. At first, the dog will go wherever he pleases and probably allover the place, the papers will be chewed on and basically the room will be a mess. Don't worry as this is what most puppies do. After a while of doing this you will notice the puppy only going in certain spots in the room, he has chosen the spot he will "do his duty" and this is a good sign that he is on his way to house trained heaven. Once this occurs, take out the paper furthest away from his "Spot" and continue to do so each day until you only have to place down a few pieces of paper at a time. If he misses the paper, place a few more sheets of paper down and start over, this time taking more time on taking the papers out. When you think he is ready to move on, start moving the papers around the room wherever you wish. Start with a few inches a day, this will teach him to go on the paper in different areas. If the puppy misses the paper again, slow down on moving them as you are probably going too fast for his racing puppy mind. Go back a few places and start over, allowing him to adjust. With time and patience, this technique will have your puppy trained in no time. However, if you would like a more direct approach and have the time for it, then I will offer one more technique.

Ok, so this one will take more of your time and monitoring of your puppy 24/7(Or as much as possible). First off, get into the routine of taking your puppy outside after every meal, drink, sleep and play period. These are the most often times that a puppy has to go, also take him out every 30-45 minutes as his bladder will be weak and when he needs to go, he needs to go!

With this exercise, there are not many steps involved. Just simply take the dog out after each meal, drink, nap and playtime. Get him used to the fact that he needs to go outside when he has to potty, eventually he will catch on to where the door is and will let you know that he needs outside. Monitoring of the puppy is too much for some people, as busy schedules get in the way. But either method I have listed will work, they both take time and patience. Always reward your puppy when he goes in the proper place, or if he starts to let you know that he has to go. This will teach him to do it more and will help him catch on to the process a lot faster.
